If you follow my social profiles (which you should) you’d know that I am an Instagram marketing expert. So it’s my job to look at Instagram profiles every single day and I even offer Instagram Audits to help people who want to grow their accounts.

In this post, I’m going to share the 6 steps to help you optimize your Instagram profile for business and conversions. 

Now before we jump into these aspects, I want you to do this:

Stop thinking like a celebrity and start thinking like a marketer

Here’s what I mean:

  • Think of your Instagram page as the landing page of your website. This way, you’ll set the right expectations from your Instagram profile (which in most cases are to attract new followers, engage with them & drive sales)

When you use your Instagram like a marketer you know your main goal is to convert your existing followers into buyers. So your content and engagement tactics will have to focus on attracting and converting your potential leads into real followers first.

That’s basically the whole goal with Instagram marketing.

Here are the 6 key components to optimize your Instagram profile for business.

How to optimize your Instagram profile for business

Step 1: Pick a niche and stick to it

The first step is to pick a niche. 

And this is probably the most important part of optimising your profile. 

You see, whether you like it or not, people typically only spend 2 – 3 seconds looking at your profile.

And based on that they’ll form an opinion about you and your brand.

So you really need to capture their attention quickly and don’t let them guess what your profile is about.

That’s why you need to pick a clear niche. 

I know you may be wondering “What if I am multi-passionate? Can I have 3 or 4 niches?” 

Unfortunately, no. I wouldn’t advise you to have multiple niches unless they are highly related to each other. 

This is because people are likely to put you in a box based on their first impression. 

For example, if you’re an artist, people would expect to see pictures of your art and you drawing something. 

If you’re visiting an animal pet shop page you’d expect to see pictures of dogs and cats (not of athletes running)

When you choose a niche and stay consistent with your content, you are drawing your own box and telling people “Hey, this is what I do and this is what you should expect from my page in the future!” 

By having a niche you’re also making it easier for people in your target audience to follow you.

This is powerful because you are now setting the expectations for your ideal followers that come to join you in the future. 

Step 2: Choose a profile picture that makes you stand out

Your profile picture is the main picture of your entire profile. 

So let’s go over how to actually create an amazing profile picture:

  • Use a professional headshot of yourself or a logo
  • Make sure you’re smiling and looking at the camera
  • Make your profile picture pop by adding a colourful background (use Canva Pro Remove Background feature or Remove.bg)

Tip: Try to avoid having blurry pictures or a group photo. 

Step 3: Add industry keywords to your name section to optimize your Instagram profile for search

The third thing you want to optimize is your Instagram name section. 

Most people choose to use their brand name, company name or personal name but you can use anything you want in this section.

I recommend you use your name + a searchable industry keyword. 

For example, if you’re a photographer in New York you can write:

“Sarah | Photographer NYC”

Step 3: Keep your username as simple as possible so people can easily find you

Avoid complicated usernames and funky characters. 

All you want is a simple username that is easy to spell so that people can find you.

So what can you write in your username section? 

I suggest you use wither your personal name, your brand name or your website and any extensions that are easy to read. 

For example, if your desired username is taken you can try adding “.” “-“ or numbers to make it unique

Tip: Take note that your username & name can only be changed once every 14 days. 

Step 5: Write an informative Instagram bio optimized for business

Instagram offers you 150 characters to tell people what your profile is about and give them a reason to follow you.

Here you need to answer 3 questions:

  1. Who you are?
  2. What you do/sell?
  3. Why should anyone follow you?

That’s all. Try to use this space to compile your profile visitors to click the follow button by showing what they’re potentially missing by not following you. 

For example: 

“Follow me to learn how to turn followers into buyers”

“FREE Marketing tips and hacks for YouTubers”

“The #1 Carpet Cleaning Specialist in NYC”

“Weekly LIVE sessions with TikTok experts”

Step 6: Add call-to-action to direct your followers to a conversion site

Every profile needs to have a strong and compelling call to action.

This is crucial because as you know Instagram allows you to put a single URL link in your profile. 

This is where you can link your: Youtube channel, website or a landing page like Linktree with multiple links.

Make sure you add arrows and a headline directing people to click on the link.
