Hey friends, it’s Alle!

The social media universe is changing at an unprecedented speed.

We’re all still surprised and confused by Facebook’s “Metaverse” announcement and trying to figure out what it means.
- Will Facebook combine with Instagram and Whatsapp into one entity?
- What will marketing in the metaverse look like?
- Are they going to focus on gaming more than e-commerce?
Your guess is as good as mine: we should wait for more details.
Nevertheless, I have been looking for answers elsewhere: Market studies conducted among social media users and brands.
These are the 6 biggest digital marketing trends to watch out for in 2022.
Trend #1: Ads on smaller social media platforms have the best ROI
Research has shown that Facebook is still the king when it comes to social media ads.
But anyone who’s marketing knows that ads on Facebook and Instagram are getting more expensive every year.
Organic reach on Facebook in 2021 was 5%, while on Instagram 10%.
Not to mention there’s also increasing competition.
You’re competing for attention with all the other businesses, influencers, marketers and your customers.
The result is obvious: ads on smaller platforms will get more popular.
Here are some alternatives:
- TikTok ads are the most interesting & engaging because they don’t feel like typical ads
- Pinterest ads have the highest ROI (lowest cost per lead)

Trend #2: Short form videos will dominate social media as the best content format (with one exception)
Long-form videos will stay where they belong: on YouTube.
But even YouTube is testing #shorts, aka. 15-sec videos that are more fun to watch!
Instagram has already “removed” IGTV (which nobody was using anyway) and is encouraging its users to share shorter videos – aka, “Reels, Reels, Reels!”

Wondering about TikTok? TikTok will still be around to entertain us and make us dance, laugh and hop on trends.
But in general, long-form videos are being replaced by shorter, more entertaining ones.
Trend #3 Livestream monetization is here – it’s really happening!
Creators are finally getting paid for going Live on social media.
We’ve all been waiting for this since 2018!
Here are a few ways Live monetization works on social media:
- Instagram has officially rolled out monetization in the form of “Badges” – currently available for US creators. Once the Beta phase is over, we can realistically expect to see this feature globally by 2022.
- Twitter introduced a Clubhouse-like (Who? are they still a thing?) feature called “Spaces” that allows creators to host live chat rooms and tip people in #bitcoin (Whaat?!) or via Patreon.

- TikTok also offers ways for followers to support creators they love by sending them “gifts” that can be converted into #cash during livestreams.
Ok, but what does that mean for brands?
The good news is that brands can benefit from monetizations too.
When a creator goes Live on Instagram, they can tag a brand or a product, thus driving traffic and revenue to the brand page.
Definitely one of the most exciting features to look out for in 2022!
Trend #4: Consumers will expect to Shop products directly on social media
Social media is no longer social, it’s commercial.

In fact, social media is moving towards becoming a digital shopping mall: where you hang out with your friends, meet new people, watch entertaining videos, visit stores and consume ads.
The final step is buying products.
Consumers in 2022 will expect to be able to shop directly on social media.
And you need to make it easy for them to find products and check out.
Trend #5: “Authenticity” as a key component in your brand messaging
As consumers demand more authenticity, less edited shots, and more realistic role models, marketers need to find ways to adapt their messaging.
Marketing campaigns in 2022 will focus on DEI (diversity, equality, inclusion) and presenting brands in a more “authentic” way.

Trend #6: Say hello to AI-supercharged customer service
Customers expect a seamless CS experience from brands on social media.
Here’s what they said they expect from digital CS:
- timely replies
- free trials (or coupons)
- knowledgeable CS
- adoption of the latest technology
- user-friendly support
Bots and technology will play an important role in helping brands provide CS and apply social listening skills 24/7.
