I Lost all my Clients. Now I’m Rebuilding my SEO Writing Business from Zero

Overcoming adversity: Rebuilding my SEO Writing Business after a severe spinal injury that left me bedridden for weeks, and kept me away from my writing desk for 6 months. Plus lessons learned.

Introduction:

In October, my life took an unexpected turn when a severe spinal injury left me bedridden for weeks. As an SEO writer, this setback threatened not only my physical well-being but also the very existence of my freelance business. However, through resilience, determination, and a commitment to prioritize my health, I turned adversity into an opportunity for growth. Today, I share my journey of rebuilding my SEO writing business from scratch, highlighting the lessons learned along the way.

A Sudden Setback Made Me Lose all Writing Clients

In October, the news from doctors was bleak: a year-long recovery period lay ahead, during which I wouldn’t be able to walk, or sit at my desk for long durations. As a freelancer, this prognosis was devastating. It meant losing all my clients and projects that I’ve worked hard to secure, and not to mention during the busiest marketing quarter of the year (the year-end). No client would wait for a freelancer for a year to recover, right? It meant “game over” for me.

Prioritizing Health and Well-being

To be honest, I couldn’t even think too much on what losing my clients meant because I was focused on my health. I knew that without good health, success in any job is hard to even imagine, so I made a conscious decision to prioritize all my energy on my recovery. Three months into my hiatus, I began to see significant improvements in my health. With each day, my strength and mobility increased, reaffirming my belief in the importance of prioritizing self-care.

  • I have to thank my chiro who kept encouraging me and motivating me – despite the hospital surgeon who said nothing can be done, and nothing can be done.
  • I also started doing daily exercises and eventually moved to swimming, walking, and cycling – all while listening to my body and not trying to push it.

The Journey of Rebuilding My Writing Business From Zero

In April, (that’s 6 months after my injury) armed with newfound determination and a renewed sense of purpose, I embarked on the journey of rebuilding my SEO writing business. Rather than dwelling on past losses, I focused on the possibilities that lay ahead. Leveraging my existing blog following, and email list I reached out to past clients and prospects, showing my commitment to delivering high-quality content.

  • Unfortunately, I did not get back all my clients, but I succeeded in signing up new ones.
  • I also took this opportunity to revamp my whole business, cut down on extra services, focus on what I’m good at, and increase my pricing.
  • This has turned out a success because, I am now fully booked for the rest of the year, with large projects and ideal writing clients.

I also talked about this in an Instagram post:

Lessons Learned:

  1. Resilience is Key: Setbacks are inevitable in any business journey. What matters most is how we respond to adversity. By remaining resilient in the face of challenges, you can use setbacks and turn them into opportunities for new growth.
  2. Health is Wealth: Without health, success loses its meaning. Prioritizing your self-care isn’t just essential for physical well-being but also for maintaining the mental clarity needed to navigate the ups and downs of being a freelancer.
  3. Adaptability is Crucial: The freelance world is ever-evolving. Being adaptable and open to new opportunities is essential for long-term success. Embracing change allows you to stay ahead of the curve and seize new opportunities.
  4. Positive Mindset Fuels Success: Success is seldom achieved by people who are negative or depressed. I know it because I was in that zone, and couldn’t even write down a single word. You need a positive mind to be able to write and inspire others.

Conclusion:

Today, as I reflect on my journey of rebuilding my SEO writing business after my injury, I am grateful for the challenges that I’ve overcome. Through resilience and determination, I know I’ve emerged stronger and more confident in my skills than ever before. As I continue on my writing journey, I carry with me the lessons learned: the value of prioritizing health and the necessity of adaptability. Armed with these lessons, I am confident in my ability to overcome any challenge that may arise and achieve success in both my personal and professional ventures.

“Thank you all of you who have shown me support during these past 6 months.” Signed: Alle Ceambur

How To Write Web Content Differently Than Other Types of Writing

Crafting Web Content: Doing Things Differently

In my decade of writing for websites, I’ve found that writing web content requires a unique approach compared to other types of writing. In this post, I’ll keep it simple – just three strategies (plus a couple of extra tips) to ensure your web content stands out:

How to Write Web Content Like a Pro

Adapt for Mobile Devices:

Web content needs to fit seamlessly into the palm of your reader’s hand. Before you put pen to paper, consider how your words will show on a smaller screen. Are they too cramped up? Chop those long sentences into bite-sized nuggets so they’re easy to scan and read. Sprinkle in more white spaces, toss in colorful images, and throw in bullet points – your readers will thank you! Make sure you consider your web content’s format carefully, ensuring it’s a smooth ride across all devices.

Example: Check out this blog post I wrote for Pallyy. We know that their readers are not going to waste time reading long-winded stories. So we adapted the format to be short, and formatted to be easy to read and follow.

Leverage Clickable Elements:

One cool perk of web writing is that you get to play with clickable elements. Buttons, text, and URL links can be your best pals in guiding traffic within your website or linking up to social media, and email lists. Map out a journey for your users, making it easy for them to navigate to different parts of your site on every page. Make web elements work for you, and you’ll boost user engagement and encourage social shares.

Harness Analytics Tools:

I cannot stress how important analytics tools are for any web content writer. Simply put – web content is useless without them. The best thing about online content is that you can track, and learn about your audience in real-time. So dive into analytics tools to research keywords that speak to your crowd. Optimize your content for search engines and determine the best times to drop content on social media. Tweak your titles based on real insights. Analytics tools are your sidekick, guiding you toward smarter decisions for constant improvement.

Tip: Use Pallyy to find your best times to post on social media and plan your social content strategy!

Additional Tips:

Create Engaging Graphics: Spice up your web content with videos, infographics, and interactive graphics. Visuals grab attention and convey information in a way that words alone can’t. And they also keep it easy on the eyes of your readers!

Conclusion

The world of writing web content is a highly competitive environment. Successful web content writers know how to adapt and keep up with the latest analytics tools. By weaving these strategies into your approach and staying tuned to the ever-changing online landscape, your web content can truly shine and connect with your audience. What else would you add to the list? 🚀

My 2023 Journey of Challenges and Growth | Worst Year

Bloganuary writing prompt
What are your biggest challenges?

Ah, 2023! What a rollercoaster year it was! Today, I’m taking a moment to share my story, not to complain or seek sympathy, but with the hope that it might resonate with others, bringing healing and a renewed sense of optimism.

Reflecting on the Most Challenging Year in my Life

1. Health Struggles: A Bed-Bound Battle

  • The Challenge: Slipped disks and a severe herniation led to months of being in bed, unable to stand, walk or move outdoors freely.
  • Impact on Work: Creative work requires a positive mindset, but all I had were tears and a sense of helplessness that made it impossible to write and post motivational content online.

2. Work Projects Slip Away: A Creative Drought

  • The Challenge: During the recovery stage, I couldn’t focus on work, leading to a decline in social media posts, and had to take a complete break from client work, which was extremely difficult. Some clients were lost.
  • Lesson Learned: Creativity thrives in inspiration; finding balance during tough times is an ongoing journey. And if you’re in the creative writing or social media business you need to be constantly healthy and don’t take long breaks from work – your clients can easily replace you.

3. Business Identity Crisis: Where Am I Heading?

  • The Challenge: With old clients moving on, I questioned the direction of my business and contemplated quitting for a more stable desk job.
  • Inner Turmoil: Balancing dreams of being a writer with the practicality of sustaining a business is a confusing feat. How does one even decide?

4. Mid-life Crisis: Purpose and Stability

  • The Challenge: I’m in my 30s, having an unstable income, with no children and a few serious health scares, I found myself questioning my purpose.
  • Personal Reflection: The quest for purpose is an ongoing journey; sometimes, we must embrace uncertainty to discover our path. I am glad to say these thoughts are far gone now, but they added to my internal struggle this past year.

5. Scaling My Content Writing Business: A Time Dilemma

  • The Challenge: I’ve been a full-time content writer for 5 years – but how do I scale the business?
  • Dilemma: Balancing passion with growth; should I explore the agency route or continue on my current path?

Lessons and Optimism:

As I reflect on the challenges of 2023, I’ve come to understand that facing adversity is an inevitable part of life. It’s not about avoiding challenges but about navigating them with resilience and learning from the experience. The journey has taught me the importance of flexibility, self-compassion, and a willingness to evolve, even past the most challenging struggles.

In sharing this, I hope to connect with others on their own journeys, reminding all of us that challenges are not roadblocks but opportunities for growth and self-discovery. As I step into the future, I do so with optimism, knowing that the rollercoaster of life can lead to unexpected highs and valuable lessons.

So here’s to embracing the challenges, learning from the lows, and rising even higher! Cheers to growth, resilience, and the unwritten chapters of our stories. 🚀

5 Things I Do for Fun as a Writer (Yes, I Have a Fun Side!)

Bloganuary writing prompt
List five things you do for fun.

Hey there, friends! Glad you’re back for another story of my life behind the blogging desk. So, if you asked me to describe myself, “fun” might not be the first word that pops into your head. I’m more of a laidback, serious, straight-to-the-point kind of person. No Friday night shenanigans, or drinking for me. But here’s the catch – that doesn’t mean I don’t know how to have a good time. When I’m not glued to my writing desk, here are five things that keep me inspired and just downright happy (and drinking coffee is not one of them!)

5 Things I Do for Fun as a Writer

  1. Building Lego Brick Houses: Alright, brace yourself for this one—I love building Lego houses. Yep, those little plastic bricks aren’t just for kids. During the 2020 pandemic, I started this sweet collection of Expert Modular Buildings sets. From the Parisian Restaurant to the Police Station and Boutique Hotel, it’s like looking at my miniature world of creativity.
  2. Reading Murder Mystery Books: Now, imagine this: me, cozying up with a cup of coffee, immersed in Agatha Christie’s Poirot. I’m not just reading; I’m looking for clues and solving crimes, my friend! I love how a good book can transport you into a different era, unraveling mysteries and living vicariously through fictional characters. Who knew being a detective could be so much fun?
  3. Scrabble, Cards, and Board Games: English is my second language, so Scrabble can be a bit of a linguistic rollercoaster for me. But you know what? I don’t care if I’m not a Scrabble champion. Playing board games it’s a hobby I started when I was a little kid. I and my East European family used to have game nights under the candlelight when the electricity was cut off – born in the 90s, can’t you tell? It doesn’t even matter which game we play – it’s all about having a good time, and maybe just a little healthy competition.
  4. Evening Swims – My Secret Escape: Picture this: the sun is setting, the pool is calm, and I’m taking a dip. Even though I am not a great swimmer, and I hate getting my head underwater, but swims have become my secret escape. It’s not just about the exercise; it’s about finding peace, especially when I need to escape those curious stares. Trust me, the tranquility is pure magic.
  5. Movie Dates: Ah, the magic of the big screen! I’m a movie buff, always up to date with the latest releases. Do you want to know what’s good? Just ask me. Movie dates are my go-to form of weeknight entertainment; they’re a chance to go out, hold hands, have some popcorn, and just relax after a stressful day!

So, there you have it – my not-so-secret list of fun things I like to do as a writer. Turns out, even serious folks like me know how to let loose in our way. Now spill the beans, what fun things bring a smile to your face? Let’s trade stories! 🌟

Dream Job? From Content Writer to World Travelling Coffee Critic

Bloganuary writing prompt
What’s your dream job?

My Dream Job: From Content Writer to World Traveling Coffee Critic

Hey friends! So, let’s talk about dream jobs. We all have that one thing we secretly daydream about when the boss isn’t looking, right? Well, for me, it’s a bit out there, but hey, dreams are meant to be bold. Forget being the next Agatha Cristie murder mystery bestseller (although that’d be cool too), my dream job is to be a coffee tester, trotting around the globe, sipping on the finest brews, and getting paid good money for it. Crazy? Maybe. Awesome? Absolutely.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I love weaving words together, and being a successful writer has always been the GOAL. But, if I’m being totally honest with you – and myself – the thought of being a jet-setting coffee connoisseur just takes the top spot. Or should I say, takes the coffee bean?

I’ve even taken baby steps toward this wild dream of mine. Yup, I’ve dipped my toes into the coffee pool and started sharing my caffeinated adventures on my YouTube channel. You can check it out if you’re curious – I’ve got some coffee-tasting videos and reviews of my home Nespresso coffee maker.

Spoiler alert: It’s not just about coffee; it’s about the whole experience, and I’m having a blast sharing it with my small community of under 2k fans!

So why being a coffee connoisseur is the DREAM?

I like to imagine that instead of being stuck in a quiet, but secluded, coffee shop corner, I’d be out there in the world, cupping coffees in Paris, savoring espressos in Italy, and maybe discovering the next big thing in a tiny, hidden cafe somewhere in Japan. It’s not just a job; it’s a journey, and I’m all in for the adventure.

And the best part? Getting paid to do it. I mean, who wouldn’t want to turn their passion into a paycheck? It’s like living the dream, one cup at a time.

So, here’s to daring dreams and taking those small steps. Who knows where this coffee-infused journey might lead me?

Cheers to dreaming big and sipping even bigger! ☕✈️

Navigating Social Media Chats: 3 SMART Tips for Online Communication

Bloganuary writing prompt
In what ways do you communicate online?

Introduction: The Internet Talk Show

Hey there, internet pals! Today, we’re diving into the wild world of online communication. And since you guys love engaging in online conversations and can spend hours listening to strangers talk meaningless things on podcasts, I thought it was time to spill my thoughts on the art of online conversations. I’ll cover oversharing, social media brain overstimulation, and the importance of boundaries when talking to strangers online.

PS: Don’t worry, I’ll be quick – I have other tasks to do today too! 👍👩‍💼

Let’s get chattin’! 🎉

1. Social Media: Friend or Foe of Real Chats?

Have you ever sat down at a dinner table with your loved ones, but everyone’s glued to their phones? Blame it on social media. It’s like our real-life convos can’t even compete with the ongoing, ever-captivating digital drama. Sure, it’s great to stay connected to the latest news online, but it shouldn’t replace those face-to-face heart-to-heart conversations.

Advice: So, let’s put down the phones once in a while and bring back the art of real conversations over coffee, shall we?

2. Oversharing Information Alert! TMI, Anyone?

Now, let’s talk about oversharing personal information online. Everybody seems to do it nowadays! We’ve all got that friend who posts more photos of their baby than necessary – sometimes ugly photos too, but you have to like them and compliment the gremlin too. And if you somehow don’t want to participate in oversharing info, an entire community of strangers starts hunting you with personal questions: where do you live, how old are you, are you married… why don’t you share your husband? etc.

PS: It’s cool to share personal updates, but I think there’s a line. After all, not everyone needs to see you breastfeed every day, right?

3. Set Online Communication Boundaries: Because Safety First!

When it comes to chatting with strangers online, it’s like walking a tightrope. Exciting, but a little risky. Imagine meeting someone new at a party – you wouldn’t spill your life story right away, would you? The same goes online. Be cautious, use those privacy settings, and don’t share your address, location or personal information.

Tip: Setting boundaries is like having a digital security guard – it keeps you safe without ruining the fun of meeting new people.

Conclusion: The ABCs of Online Communication

So there you have it, the ABCs of online communication. Social media is an awesome tool to connect with new people and grow your business, but let’s not forget the joy of real convos. Don’t spill all your beans online, and be a little picky about who gets VIP access to your life.

What’s your take on these online communication tips?

How do you find the balance between online and offline conversations in your life? Share your thoughts and let’s continue the conversation! Happy chatting, everyone! 🚀✨

What Really Makes a Great Leader: 3 Simple Skills

Bloganuary writing prompt
What makes a good leader?

Hey there! Leading a team can be a big deal, right? Some people are born great leaders while others train for years to become one. In my course of study, I learned that leadership is a skill that can be taught. So, if you want to find out what makes a leader good at their job, keep reading!

Let’s break it down into three simple skills that make a great leader:

Skill #1: Having a Clear Vision

A good leader is like a guiding light in a dark tunnel. They can see where the team should go and inspire them to want to get there. This clear vision gives everyone a sense of direction and a reason to work together. When a leader talks about their vision in a way that everyone gets, it pumps up the team and gets them excited to tackle anything that comes their way.

Skill #2: Being Honest and Trusted

Trust is the secret ingredient of successful team leadership, and honesty is the first step. A good leader is straightforward, keeps things real, and does what they say. This builds a strong foundation of trust within the team by proving they are honest. When everyone trusts the leader, it’s like a superpower that helps the team work better together. Trust in the leader drives creativity and innovation and inspires people to take risks and do their best work.

Skill #3: Communication is Key

A good leader is a great communicator and knows how to talk with their heart. They listen to the team, understand how each team member feels, and try to make everyone feel, valued, appreciated and included. This kind of communication creates a friendly and supportive atmosphere. Leaders who get what their team is going through can solve problems better, make work more enjoyable, and make everyone stay motivated and focused on a goal.

Conclusion

To sum it up, being a great leader is about having a clear vision, being honest and trustworthy, and talking with heart. It’s like being the coolest captain steering a ship through the seas of teamwork.

What other skills do you think are important for leaders that can help them guide their teams to success in the exciting world of work?

3 Marketing Trends to Look for in 2024 (for Personal Brands or Coaching Business)

2024 Marketing Vision: 3 Trends to Propel Your Agency, Brand, or Coaching Business

As the new year approaches, the familiar question whispers in every marketer’s ear: “What’s next?” For agencies, personal brands, coaches, and service providers, 2024 brings exciting opportunities to connect deeper with audiences, drive sales, and stand out in a crowded digital landscape. But navigating these dynamic waters requires a sharp focus on identifying strategic trends that deliver results.

Here are 3 key trends to embrace in 2024, along with practical tips to turn them into your competitive advantage:

Trend #1: Optimize Your Social Media Profiles for Sales – Every Like, Every Share Matters

Gone are the days of fluffy bios and vanity metrics. In 2024, your social media profiles need to be lead-generating powerhouses. Every detail, from your profile picture to your captions, becomes a carefully crafted sales funnel. Here’s how to optimize:

  • Craft a Magnetic Bio: Use keywords your ideal clients search for, highlight your unique value proposition, and include a clear call to action (CTA), like “Book a Free Consultation” or “Download My Top 5 Tips.”
  • Showcase Social Proof: Feature client testimonials, case studies, and success stories in eye-catching visuals and videos. People trust their peers, so let your happy clients do the talking for you.

Testimonial: Read how we’ve helped ACG Tax Service turn their Instagram bio into a lead magnet that highlights their keywords and speaks to their target audience in 6 months: Case Study

Tip: Don’t forget the basics! Make sure your profile information is complete, your profile photos are on brand and you include your website link at the top so it’s easy for people to contact you.

Trend #2: Interactive Content – Engage, Don’t Just Broadcast

Passive content is out. In 2024, audiences crave interaction and personalized experiences. Make your content interactive to ignite curiosity and build strong connections:

  • Host Live Q&A Sessions and Workshops: Interact with your audience in real-time, answer their questions, and showcase your expertise in a fun and engaging format.

Tip: Partner with other brands or influencers for joint live sessions to reach a wider audience.

  • Use Polls and Quizzes: Gather valuable data about your audience, personalize future content, and boost engagement by turning passive viewers into active participants.

Example: Ask your followers on Instagram stories: “What’s your biggest marketing challenge right now?” Follow up by sharing the results and address the most common responses in your next post.

  • Leverage Interactive Video: Embed polls, quizzes, and clickable elements in your videos to keep viewers glued to their screens and capture their attention.

Tip: Organize your social media calendar and plan your content in advance with Pallyymy go-to social media scheduler for 2024!

Trend #3: Free Value Bombs – Build Trust & Authority One Tip at a Time

People are bombarded with sales messages all the time. The best way to stand out is to offer genuine value, advice or help without expecting anything in return. So don’t be afraid to share your knowledge, expertise, and actionable tips to establish yourself as a trusted authority:

  • Create Free Templates and Frameworks: Provide valuable resources that help your audience solve specific problems.

Tip: Offer downloadable PDFs, checklists, or editable templates directly on your website to capture email addresses and nurture leads.

  • Post Bite-sized Educational Content: Share quick tips, insights, and industry news on social media, blog posts, or short videos. Consistency is key! Aim for short, impactful bursts of knowledge.

Example: “3 Social Media Mistakes Costing You Clients (and How to Fix Them)”

  • Offer Free Consultations or Webinars: Give potential clients a taste of your services and expertise. This builds trust, demonstrates your value proposition, and opens doors for potential conversions.

Bonus Marketing Trend to Look out for: Personalizing the Narrative – Let Your Brand Shine (but Don’t Overdo it)

People connect with humans, not faceless corporations. Share personal posts that highlight your brand’s story, challenges, and successes to forge a deeper connection with your audience. However, it’s important to maintain a balance – you don’t want every post to be about yourself!

  • Highlight Client Case Studies: Showcase your impact with real-world success stories. Share videos, testimonials, and data-driven results to prove your effectiveness.

Example: “Working with [Your Brand] transformed my business! They helped me achieve [specific result] in just [timeframe]” – [Client Name, Title, Company]

  • Feature Your Team: Show off your people, their personalities, and their passions!
